The week of February 23-March 1 is Montessori Education Week, and West Side Montessori, along with thousands of other Montessori schools around the world, are celebrating with lectures, open houses, community displays and resolutions from state and local governments. Ohio Governor John Kasich has just signed a Resolution recognizing Montessori Education Week.
West Side Montessori will take time this week to celebrate Montessori education with a variety of activities including: learning more about Dr. Maria Montessori, peace education projects, and older students working with younger students on campus. A family sing-a-long also will be held at each campus in honor of this special week.
Ohio is home to more than 150 Montessori schools, including the first public Montessori school (Sands Montessori), first public Montessori High School (Clark Montessori HS), and second Montessori private school (Ruffing Montessori School) in the country. West Side Montessori, with locations in Perrysburg and Toledo, is one of five fully-accredited Montessori schools in Ohio.
The influence of Montessori education continues to grow, as Dr. Maria Montessori’s methods for cultivating children's optimal development continue to be substantiated by cutting edge research in a variety of fields, including psychology and neuroscience. Recently a Forbes article touted Montessori as the "future of education," citing its signature elements of “no grades, child-size objects and students choosing their own activities.” Montessori materials and techniques support children’s natural love of learning, and help to develop independence, self-confidence, and the responsible citizenship that is the foundation for peace. Notable Montessori alumni include Jeff Bezos (Founder of Amazon), Sergey Brin and Larry Page (Founders of Google), Julia Child (chef), Jimmy Wales (Founder of Wikipedia), and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs (singer, record producer and actor).
