Congratulations to the West Side Montessori Middle School team, which finished seventh at the 2013 Toledo Area MATHCOUNTS competition. In its 30th year, the competition was hosted by the Toledo Society of Professional Engineers at the University of Toledo on Saturday, Feb. 2. WSM was one of 25 Toledo-area public and private schools competing.
Individually, Patrick Gorman, an 8th grade student, finished 10th overall out of about 200 students and will move on to States for the second consecutive year! The state competition is Saturday, March 9. Patrick also finished fourth in the Countdown Round.
Members of WSM’s MATHCOUNTS team included: Bobbi Baranek (8th), Katherine Bauer (8th), Jami Stout (7th), and Patrick. Individual students who participated at the event include: Sadie Kaplan (8th), Claire Kohler (7th), Adam Richards (8th), Michael Theis (7th), and Leen Yassine (7th).
Also receiving an award was 7th grader Janaki Patel, who won the t-shirt design contest. Her design will be worn at the 2014 Toledo Area MATHCOUNTS competition. The team is coached by middle school teacher Tom Strong.
MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory.
