Extracurricular Activities

 

West Side Montessori is pleased to offer several options for extracurriculars. These classes are offered after school and are taught by West Side Montessori teachers and outside instructors. In general, each session will range from five to six weeks long.

Session 3

The third session of extracurricular classes will start the week of February 5 and end by March 23.

Open registration for Session 3 opens Tuesday, January 16, at noon, and continues through the end of the school day on Monday, January 22.

Late registration ($10 late fee) begins Tuesday, January 23. The registration window closes Friday, January 26 at noon. No registrations will be accepted after January 26. 

Online registration and payment information can be found under your parent portal account on the WSM website. The forms will be available through your family's account, allowing you to sign up electronically and then pay using your Discover, Mastercard, or Visa credit card or by e-check. The online registration allows for only one registration per student. You will not be able to add or change classes online once you register.

Sarah Duvall completed her 200-hour teacher training in 2014 through It's Yoga Toledo and went on to earn her 50-hour Rocket certification in 2015.  She has taught yoga at West Side Montessori for four years.

Grant Wilson is the project director of the NURTURES grant at the University of Toledo. He is actively involved in the development and deployment of STEM-based professional development for PK-3 teachers. His involvement with the Sylvania STEM center began in 2012 as a coach of his son's FLLjr team. Over the years he has continued working with the FLLjr teams as a facilitator as well as coaching a FLL team. Along with Sylvania STEM Center Director Tom Burnworth, Mr. Wilson has developed summer camps focusing on engineering experience in early childhood and computer programming with SCRATCH.  Tom Burnworth is the Director of Operations at the Sylvania STEM Center (SSC). He is the co-founder of SSC and over the past 7 years has coached and taught various STEM related teams, innovative summer camps, and workshops at the center.

Mondays - 3:30 to 4:15 pm. This class will give an overview of the basics of photography, helping students learn skills needed to capture life through their camera lens.  More Less

Students will spend time practicing what they have learned and will share what they have captured with fellow students. By the end of class, they should have a greater excitement and interest in photography along with basic camera knowledge and photography terminology. Leah Lorann, a world traveler, will be teaching this class. She believes that taking time to pause with your camera gives you a chance to preserve the memory and share the beauty around you!

Life Through a Lens for Lower Elementary will be held on Mondays from 3:30-4:15 p.m. for 6 weeks in the Sassafras Room.

Science Adventurers – STEM Creation Goldfinch Room $90.00
Wednesdays - 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and fun will abound in this session of Science Adventures - STEAM Creations. Students will engage in hands-on activities using science, technology, engineering, art, and math.  More Less

Each week, students will hear a funny story that will end with a challenge.  It will be their mission, working as a team, to solve the challenge provided with the materials given. From making marble runs to building insulated containers to hold delicate materials, this will be a science class with Natalie Fisher that your kids won't want to miss!

Braided Garden Lilac Room $108.00
Thursdays - 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Calling all flower girls! Each class starts with creating your own hair accessory made by arranging silk or real flowers. More Less

All materials are provided in the class, with a new design theme each week. At the end of the class, simple hairstyles (crown braid, French braid, and fishtail) will be taught that will pair with your floral hair pieces. Bridgett is in her 9th year of teaching at West Side and is the mother of two West Side students: Brookelynn and Brayden. She is passionate about gardening and creatively looks for ways to engage students with the outdoors.

Braintwisters Goldfinch Room $108.00
Thursdays - 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Braintwisters is for lower elementary students who want to sharpen math skills, increase learning, have fun, and get excited about math. More Less

This club is a great way to enrich lower elementary math skills.  Some of the activities may include: playing math/logic games, exploring famous mathematicians, working with various geometry materials, solving magic squares, and much more.  Each week there will be plenty of hands-on activities to challenge their mathematical skills while having fun! This class will be offered by Natalie Fisher and Jenn Schoepf.

 

Braintwisters will be held from 3:30-4:15 p.m. on Thursdays for 6 weeks in the Meeting Room (former French Room).

Sarah Duvall completed her 200-hour teacher training in 2014 through It's Yoga Toledo and went on to earn her 50-hour Rocket certification in 2015.  She has taught yoga at West Side Montessori for three years.

Students will spend time practicing what they have learned and will share what they have captured with fellow students. By the end of class, they should have a greater excitement and interest in photography along with basic camera knowledge and photography terminology. Leah Lorann, a world traveler, will be teaching this class. She believes that taking time to pause with your camera gives you a chance to preserve the memory and share the beauty around you!

Grant Wilson is the project director of the NURTURES grant at the University of Toledo. He is actively involved in the development and deployment of STEM-based professional development for PK-3 teachers. His involvement with the Sylvania STEM center began in 2012 as a coach of his son's FLLjr team. Over the years he has continued working with the FLLjr teams as a facilitator as well as coaching a FLL team. Along with Sylvania STEM Center Director Tom Burnworth, Mr. Wilson has developed summer camps focusing on engineering experience in early childhood and computer programming from SCRATCH.  Tom Burnworth is the Director of Operations at the Sylvania STEM Center (SSC). He is the co-founder of SSC and over the past 7 years has coached and taught various STEM-related teams, innovative summer camps, and workshops at the center.

Le Grand Concours is a nationally recognized program. Margaret Kohler has taught French at West Side for 17 years and currently teaches French K-8. Prior to that, she taught at the University of Michigan. She has lived in France and loves traveling in Europe and Canada. Margaret enjoys introducing West Side students to French and Francophone (French-speaking) cultures! This is her sixth year facilitating the French National Contest for WSM students and alum.

Donna has been a Spanish instructor at West Side for over five years. Donna takes pride in how well her students do once they have graduated from West Side, most of them testing into Spanish 2 (honors) and even Spanish 3 classes their Freshman year in high school. Donna is most thrilled to see how her students progress over the years into being linguistically proficient and culturally broadened aficionados of Spanish and its many people, cultures, and history.

All materials are provided in the class, with a new design theme each week. At the end of the class, simple hairstyles (crown braid, French braid, and fishtail) will be taught that will pair with your floral hair pieces. Bridgett is in her 9th year of teaching at West Side and is the mother of two West Side students: Brookelynn and Brayden. She is passionate about gardening and creatively looks for ways to engage students with the outdoors.
