Staff Spotlight: Abby Baum

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Your background, your interests, your dreams, and your hobbies.

I was homeschooled and grew up in Swanton, OH. I studied graphic design online through Liberty University, and I also absolutely love working with children! I learn something every day just by watching them explore, grow, and interact with each other. I started at West Side in 2023 as a part-time receptionist and instantly fell in love with the peaceful atmosphere and friendly community. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, whether we're walking in the Metroparks or playing board games.

What’s your favorite Montessori quote?

“The things he [the child] sees are not just remembered; they form a part of his soul.” This quote reminds me of how important children's daily interactions are, whether with their work, each other, or their teacher. Even seemingly small or mundane occurrences can lead to significant life lessons.

What is the most important life lesson you’d like to share with your students?

I want to enable them to develop a love of learning and cultivate kindness toward each other. I believe developing a love of learning helps us reach our fullest potential, as it encourages us to continually discover new things and challenge ourselves, while cultivating kindness helps us create healthy communities.

What do you love about Montessori?

There are many things I love about Montessori education, but one of the aspects I particularly appreciate is how the curriculum is designed to holistically recognize and nurture children's emotional needs and character development, along with helping them succeed academically. I also love that Montessori education teaches children to be independent and responsible for themselves from a young age.

What would you tell a prospective family about West Side?

West Side truly is an amazing environment with its beautiful classrooms, natural playgrounds, and caring staff. The children here learn both life skills and academic lessons in a loving and peaceful environment. I feel so blessed to work here, and observing and talking with the children continually shows me how much they love coming here too!
