West Side Montessori Students Shine at Montessori Model UN in New York City

Last week, West Side Montessori Middle School had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) conference in New York City. MMUN is a unique program that simulates the United Nations General Assembly for middle school and upper elementary students, offering them a chance to step into the roles of global delegates. Through this experience, students develop critical skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and global awareness while learning that their voices matter in shaping the world around them.

The Goals of MMUN

The Montessori Model UN experience is designed to instill important values and skills in students, including:
  • Developing global awareness – Understanding international issues and perspectives.
  • Enhancing problem-solving skills – Crafting resolutions to address pressing global challenges.
  • Building collaborative experience – Working with peers from around the world to achieve common goals.
  • Empowering student voices – Realizing that they can contribute to real-world solutions.
  • Fostering a sense of global community and compassion – Learning the importance of cooperation and empathy in international relations.

A Special Honor for WSM Students

During the conference, two West Side Montessori students, Angelica Teets and Vicente Ononye, received a special honor. In their committee room, made up of 76 student delegates, each student worked to draft resolutions addressing global issues. At the end of the resolution process, the delegates voted for six individuals who demonstrated the strongest leadership throughout the process.

Angelica and Vicente were among the six students selected from their committee to present their draft resolutions. This meant that when all 1,600 student delegates gathered at the UN, Angelica and Vicente had the incredible honor of speaking in the same space where real-world UN delegates debate and make decisions. Though their speeches were brief, the moment was powerful—a testament to their hard work, leadership, and dedication to the spirit of diplomacy.

A Life-Changing Experience

For all the students involved, attending MMUN was an eye-opening and transformative experience. Representing different countries, drafting resolutions, and engaging in diplomatic discussions helped them realize the importance of global cooperation. MMUN's 2025 theme, "It Takes All of Us," showed them that they have the ability to make a difference in the world, even at a young age.

Congratulations to all the West Side Montessori students who participated, and a special round of applause to Angelica and Vicente for their outstanding leadership and achievement. Their experience at MMUN will surely inspire them—and their peers—to continue working toward a better, more connected world.
